米イリノイ州フォートシェリダン出身。高校時代に演技と脚本の執筆を始め、卒業後は獣医を目指したが、62年に劇団に入団し米国内を巡業。その後、オフブロードウェイで脚本家として成功を収める。68年からロックバンド「Holy Modal Rounders」のドラマーとしても活動し、69年には映画に初出演する。71年、英ロンドンに渡り、演劇界で脚本や演出を手がけるほか、俳優としても活動。74年に帰国し、ボブ・ディランが自身のツアーを題材に脚本を書き、製作・監督・主演を務めた映画「レナルド＆クララ」（78）で、共同で脚本を手がけ出演もした。79年には、戯曲「Buried Child（原題）」でピュリッツァー賞を受賞。映画「デイズ・オブ・ヘブン」（78）を経て、「ライトスタッフ」（83）でアカデミー助演男優賞にノミネートされ、俳優としても実績を残す。「ファーノース」（88）で映画監督も経験した。同作の主演女優ジェシカ・ラングと長年パートナー関係にあったが、09年に破局。
