英ノース・シールズ出身。3人兄弟の末子で、7歳年上の次兄リドリーも映画監督兼プロデューサー。65年、リドリーの初短編映画に主演し、4年後には自身も短編作品を監督する。王立美術院を卒業後、画家の道を歩み始めたが、CM監督に転向してリドリー・スコット・アソシエイツで働く。83年「ハンガー」で長編映画監督デビュー。ハリウッドに渡り監督した「トップガン」（86）が世界的に大ヒット。同作で注目のフィルムメーカーになったばかりでなく、主演のトム・クルーズをスターの座に押し上げた。続いての「ビバリーヒルズ・コップ2」（87）も成功を収める。その他「トゥルー・ロマンス」（93）、「エネミー・オブ・アメリカ」（98）などのメガホンをとり、「クリムゾン・タイド」（95）、「マイ・ボディガード」（04）、「デジャヴ」（06）、「サブウェイ123 激突」（09）、「アンストッパブル」（10）の5作品でデンゼル・ワシントンとタッグを組んだ。リドリーと共同の製作会社スコット・フリー・プロダクションでは、「LIFE IN A DAY 地球上のある一日の物語」（11）、「プロメテウス」（12）といった映画のみならず、「NUMBERS 天才数学者の事件ファイル」（05～10）や「グッド・ワイフ」（09～12）といったTVシリーズの製作にも携わる。12年8月19日、ロサンゼルスのビンセントトーマス橋から飛び降り自殺を図り他界。享年68歳で、「アンストッパブル」が最後の監督作となった。
