Dorothy Jeakins

Costume Design · Known for The Sound of Music

Dorothy Jeakins (January 11, 1914 – November 21, 1995) was an American costume designer. Born in San Diego, California, she attended public school in Los Angeles from first grade through high school. As a senior at Fairfax High School, she was offered a scholarship to study at the Otis Art Institute (now known as Otis College of Art and Design). She also attended the Art Students League of Los Angeles, under Stanton Macdonald-Wright. She was later awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Otis College in 1987. Jeakins worked on WPA projects and as a Disney artist in the 1930s. Her fashion career began as a designer at I. Magnin's, where she was spotted by director Victor Fleming. Hired as a sketch artist for Joan of Arc (1948), Jeakins worked on the costumes with Barbara Karinska and shared an Oscar with her in the color category. This was the first Oscar ever awarded for costumes outside the black and white category. Jeakins was unusual in that she freelanced, never signing a long-term contract with any one studio. She worked steadily for the next thirty-nine years, winning another two Oscars, for Samson and Delilah (1949, shared with Edith Head and others), The Night of the Iguana (1964), and another 12 nominations. She designed period costumes for The Ten Commandments (1956), The Music Man (1962), The Sound of Music (1965), Little Big Man (1970), The Way We Were (1973), Young Frankenstein (1974) and The Dead (1987). Her modern dress excursions included Niagara (1953), Three Coins in the Fountain (1954), South Pacific (1958), and On Golden Pond (1981). Jeakins also worked on stage productions, including South Pacific (in which Motley was the principal costume designer), King Lear, Winesburg, Ohio, and The World of Suzie Wong (for which she received her third Tony nomination), and such television productions as the 1957 production of Annie Get Your Gun, and Mayerling. For ten years beginning in 1953, she served as designer for the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera. In 1961 she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to study in Japan. She spent a year there, studying theater costume. From 1967 to 1970, Ms. Jeakins was Curator of Costumes and Textiles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 1987, she was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award for outstanding women who, through their endurance and excellence of their work, have helped to expand women's roles within the entertainment industry. Jeakins, who retired in 1990, once summed up her designing: "I can put my world down to two words: Make beauty. It's my cue and my private passion."

John Smith

Actor John Smith was born Robert Errol Van Orden in Los Angeles. He began his career singing with The Robert Mitchell Boy Choir, a group which appeared in two Bing Crosby films, Going My Way (1944) and The Bells of St. Mary's (1945). His agent Henry Willson, who also gave Tab Hunter and Rock Hudson their names, changed Van Orden's name to "John Smith". Robert Hofler, author of "The Man Who Invented Rock Hudson", reports that an actress identified as Pocahontas Crowfoot was in the courtroom when the name change was granted. In We're No Angels (1955), Smith had a small role as "Arnaud", the ship's doctor. Aldo Ray, observing the doctor in full dress whites, says "he looks like a glass of milk". John Smith's other film credits include Circus World (1964) and Justin Morgan Had a Horse (1972). Smith also appeared in the television westerns Cimarron City (1958) and Laramie (1959).

Nick Tate

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Nicholas John Tate (born June 18, 1942) is an Australian actor best known for his role as Eagle pilot Alan Carter in both seasons of the 1970s science fiction television series Space: 1999. His parents were the actors John Tate and Neva Carr Glyn. His maternal grandparents were also actors, originally from Great Britain, who performed in Vaudeville. His father also had a connection to the works of Space:1999 creator Gerry Anderson, being a secondary voice actor in Thunderbirds. Tate's big break came with the Australian television series My Brother Jack, followed later by a production of the musical The Canterbury Tales where he played "Nicholas the Gallant" for eighteen months on stage and on tour throughout the country. This was followed by the TV series Dynasty (not related to the later American series of the same name), where he joined his father John Tate for the first time on camera; the two playing father and son roles. Following his work in Space: 1999, he broke through in film with an award-winning role in the movie The Devil's Playground. He continued to work in film and has continued to have many supporting roles in a number of important theatrical films, including The Year My Voice Broke, Richard Attenborough's Cry Freedom, Return from the River Kwai, A Cry in the Dark, and Hook. Nick Tate has also made guest appearances on numerous hit TV series, such as The X-Files, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Murder, She Wrote, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (in the sixth season episode "Honor Among Thieves"), Farscape and in the Lost episode "Tabula Rasa". Tate appeared in the TRIP (Tony Rudlin Ingrid Pitt Productions) production of Duty Free (Don't Bother To Dress), by Emmerdale writer, Neville Siggs, which ran in London's West End for 3 months after a successful National Tour. He is also well known for his voiceover work in theatrical trailers for such films as Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible, as well as work in commercials, including Guinness beer spots airing beginning in fall 2006. Tate and four other well known voice artists (Don LaFontaine, John Leader, Mark Elliot, and Al Chalk) parodied their unique voiceover styles en route to an awards show in a 1997 short film, 5 Men and a Limo. In 2000, he provided the voice for the Australian tycoonist Ozzie Mandrill in the game Escape from Monkey Island. Nick Tate returned to the musical stage, where he played the leading role of Captain E.J. Smith in the Australian premiere of the musical Titanic, which opened on October 25, 2006.
